作为现代性的经典理论家,韦伯为解决现代性困境而提出的“审美救赎”方案,既为现代美学提供了重要的理论资源,也是促使法兰克福学派美学思想形成发展的一个重要的中间环节。在韦伯那里得以展开的合理化进程中的诸多现代性问题,都在法兰克福学派那里得到了更为激进的回应。从中可以看到,“审美救赎”思想从韦伯开始经由法兰克福学派第一代理论家发展成为一个彻底的审美乌托邦的理论想像,并最终由哈贝马斯在批判理论的框架中给予了必要的反思。
