Over the years, suspicions about the authenticity of China’s economic statistics both at home and abroad have proved unfounded after a press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council on December 20, 2005. According to the data from the first national economic census, in 2004, China’s GDP was about 16 trillion yuan, an increase of 2.3 trillion yuan (16.8%) over the original number of express letters. 93% of new GDP comes from the tertiary industry. The proportions of the new primary, secondary and tertiary industries were 13.1%, 46.2% and 40.7% respectively (the original number was 15.2%, 52.9% and 31.9% respectively). According to the exchange rate of the year, the total new GDP of our country was 1,931.7 billion U.S. dollars (equivalent to 1.6537 trillion U.S. dollars), accounting for 4.4% of the world’s total GDP (accounting for 3.8% of the old statistics) . As a result, in accordance with the International Monetary Fund statistics, China’s GDP in 2004 re-surpassed Italy, ranking sixth in the world.
