Metropolitan areas around the world produce mountains of trashthat threaten to bury them.Landfills,the traditional repository for gar-bage,are now brimming over,and one of the reasons is the increasinguse of plastics in products and in packaging.Though they arelight-weight,plastics are bulky—occupying about 30 percent of the vol-ume in landfills—and do not decompose.
