Since Singapore has succeeded in controlling most of the infectious diseases, most of the statutory infectious cases in recent years have been imported overseas. The main reason is the increase in the number of contacts and recruitment of migrant workers in Singapore with endemic infectious diseases. There are three of the most common infectious diseases imported into Singapore: malaria, typhus (typhoid and paratyphoid) and acute viral hepatitis. From 1977 to 1982, a total of 1250 malaria cases were imported, including 418 cases of typhus and 321 cases of viral hepatitis (including 108 cases of positive HBsAg). Over the same period, Singapore reported 96.1% of malaria, 33.8% of typhus and 10.9% of viral hepatitis.
