The Caribbean is one of the world’s largest potential oil-producing regions and oil pollution is threatening the marine environment here. Vanadium (V), a large element present in crude oil, is used as a typical indicator of coastal oil pollution in the Caribbean Sea in Panama. We used ICP-MS, combined with annual growth zones of coral skeletons, to develop a century-old peasant based on vanadium concentrations. The chronology of vanadium clearly shows that the background value of seawater concentrations observed in the early coral history increased after refining began in 1962. The chronology of vanadium reveals that the major environmental degradation processes in coastal areas may start around the 1960s, but we can not confirm this assumption because of the lack of long-term ecological and pollution-related data. The gradual increase of vanadium in the marine environment may be used as an indicator of oil pollution.
