Silk, which has historically been used as a raw material for high-end textiles, has now new uses. An article from the July issue of the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (People’s Republic of China) has shed light on the fact that silk fibroin can increase the heat resistance of heat-sensitive biologicals - vaccines, antibiotics - and extend their shelf life. Vaccines have saved patients around the world because of their efficiency and cheapness, yet such biologics must be refrigerated at low temperatures during use and transport in order to remain bioactive. Eighty percent of vaccine costs are spent on refrigeration equipment. Yanai, a scientist at Tufts University in the United States
