According to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, the United States, the lab developed an aluminum-iron alloy that showed higher ductility and impact toughness. Judging from the typical brittleness level of such materials, this ferrous-aluminum alloy achieves beyond the expected ductility and impact toughness. The alloy contains 40 at% Al, and its tensile ductility is enhanced by proper control of the process-induced microstructure and the micro-alloying additions of Mo, Zr and C. Cast alloys with a grain size of 200 mm or more can draw as high as 4 to 5% at room temperature in the atmosphere
