Objective: To explore the relationship between senile cataract and superoxide dismutase (SOD) and trace elements in serum. Methods: The activity of erythrocyte superoxide dismutase (SOD) and serum trace elements (Cu, Zn, Ca, Fe) in 61 senile cataract patients were detected, and 121 healthy controls were used as SOD control group. The trace element control group was 48 cases. Results: The activity of SOD in the blood of senile cataract patients was significantly lower than that of the normal control group. The contents of trace elements Cu, Zn and Ca in serum were not decreased, while the content of Fe was higher than that of the normal control group. Conclusion: The formation of senile cataract is related to the decrease of anti-oxidative ability in the eyes. Journal of Ophthalmology 2000; 16: 246 ~ 248
