At the turn of the century, a new kind of cultural phenomenon appeared in the coastal city of eastern China - the advent of the modern Western encyclopedia in Chinese. These new educational tools provide succinct and orderly information on the numerous issues in the culture of modern society in concise terms. Their innovative significance far outweighs the term “reference book” used by China. This article examines the “General Encyclopedia of New Encyclopedia” published by Huang Moses in 1911 and is considered as the most advanced one of his kind published in China during 1903-1911. We pay particular attention to the features of this book which became the “modern” reference book in order to outline the modern, cosmopolitan nature of this dictionarry, as well as showing the academic achievements of scholar Huang Moses. From a particular point of view, Showing the process of western learning becoming a symbol of social style in the late Qing dynasty.
