The design of composite structures has been hampered by the pattern of thinking. Most of these modes of thinking can be recalled as far as the industrial revolution. This article reports on the discovery of the first new connection to the composite structure. These “snap” connections are based on a novel fiber-architecture design that pays special attention to the requirements placed on the layers for transferring loads. This connection has been successfully applied to a full composite transmission tower and a heavy load truss structure. This technology will have an impact on the future design of tall buildings and many other civil engineering structures. However, this can only be achieved by educating composite design professionals. This is one of the most important factors needed to bring this technology into the 21st century.
