琼北地区是我国华南少数几个高烈度区之一。据历史地震记载,曾在1605年发生过7.5级的琼山大地震,但近300年来只有几次5级地震的记录,现代仪器记录的地震也很少。过去在这个地区进行的工作较少,也没有进行深入研究。因而使1977年编制的该区地震烈度区划图,也受到了很大限制。琼北地震烈度复核工作是国家地震局应海 The North of Qiongbei is one of the few high-intensity areas in South China.
