A US research team said that the placenta of pregnant women is not a sterile environment as previously thought, but a small but diverse microbe community. These micro-organisms directly affect the health of the fetus, and may even be related to the fetus is premature. Microbial community is a general term for bacteria, viruses and fungi. Chesty O’Gaool, an associate professor at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, and colleagues in the United States report in the journal Science Translational Medicine that the new study shows that the placental microbe in pregnant women may come from the oral cavity, indicating that the oral health of pregnant women is crucial to the health of the fetus. In addition, there is a significant difference in the composition of placental microbial communities between premature fetuses and full term fetuses, indicating that placental microbial communities are associated with preterm birth
