Introduction The design of the Soviet main battle tank has been shrouded in a mysterious atmosphere for many years. Over the years, the public has become familiar with the aviation design bureau of the Soviet Union and its chief architect, but has little knowledge of the Soviet tank design agency. However, in the past two years, some new information about the design institutes of the Soviet Union and Russia's main battle tanks was suddenly announced. This information will allow many analysts to revisit their perceptions of the Soviet Union's weapons design and procurement practices as these new sources make the long-over-imagined picture of the Soviet institutions in the West a problem.
