For the first time, in theory, the logarithm of the quantum well laser gain and carrier density logarithmically replaced the linear relationship in the original rate equation. An improved rate equation was obtained and the steady-state and modulation characteristics were analyzed. The optimal cavity length and maximum modulation bandwidth for obtaining the lowest threshold are theoretically obtained
