In recent years, Japan's research on ancient buildings before the 12th century has gradually flourished. One of the reasons is that the restoration and reconstruction project of the first Great Hall of the Pingcheng Palace has prompted scholars to conduct a full-scale re-examination of the existing architectural heritage. In recent years, it is particularly worth noting that the new achievement is a reinterpretation of the architectural system, design principles and detailed meanings of the existing ancient (7th-12th century) architecture from a new perspective. This new research approach is about “how to build” research. This article describes the overview and direction of this trend.
