As early as 1893, the Parvov School had shown that dogs who had undergone ECK’s fistula surgery had “meat poisoning” if they fed large quantities of meat. For such dogs, the same poisoning can also be caused by the administration of ammonium salts. Clinically, the use of ammonium chloride or other nitrogenous substances in patients with liver disease, or anastomosis of the portal vein, often causes symptoms similar to hepatic coma. Based on these facts, it can be seen that liver diseases may cause the disorder of ammonia metabolism, and ammonia poisoning caused by ammonia metabolism disorder may also be a cause of hepatic coma.
