In many parts of the world, brucellosis is a clear occupational disease. Many countries have succeeded in eradicating brucellosis in native animals, thereby reducing the chances of human infection. In the United States, the prevalence of B. intracellularis has also been drastically reduced, in part, over the past 40 years due in part to the monitoring and pull-out measures initially adopted to reduce the outbreak of brucellosis in herds. The number of cases dropped from 6,321 in 1947 to 232 in 1972 and further to only 83 in 1989. However, it is clear that the brucellosis infection has not been completely diagnosed and reported. It is estimated that there are about 26 cases reported in the United States for each case
