Since the 1960s, mistakes have drawn the attention of linguists. With the continuous increase of China’s foreign exchange, the domestic research on the pronunciation errors of Chinese English learners began to emerge in the mid-1990s. The researchers summarized the characteristics of English pronunciation of Chinese students and analyzed the effect of the learner’s mother tongue on their second language pronunciation. However, the research on the impact of phonetic environment on pronunciation errors is still rare. Therefore, the author conducted this study to explore the impact of nasal consonance on vowel pronunciation of Chinese students, hoping to provide a new perspective for understanding Chinese students’ pronunciation errors. Twenty-two non-English majors from Sun Yat-Sen University participated in the study. They completed two tasks of reading independent words and an essay, and their performance was recorded using the recording software Goldwave. Subsequently, two native English speakers completed the mistake assessment together with the author. Through comparative analysis of different types of vowel pronunciation errors in different environments, we can draw the following conclusion: nasal tone has a significant effect on Chinese vowel pronunciation of English learners, and has a greater impact on the diphthongs. Therefore, it is suggested that English teachers should pay attention to the pronunciation of vowels before nasal sounds and guide students to practice these pronunciations more.
