A census method was used to survey 1,433 primary and secondary school students in Hanban commune in Yanbian from August to October 1979, aged from 6 to 19, of whom 847 were from 8 to 12 years old. After a detailed understanding of the medical history and mental and physical examination of the suspicious persons by the authors, 51 cases of mild brain dysfunction syndrome (MBD) were diagnosed after excluding other diseases of the nervous system and other factors, with a prevalence of 3.5%. The prevalence rates of children of both ethnic groups in Han and Han dynasties (3.1% and 4.6% respectively) were not significantly different.
