Nineteenth-century American romantic novelist Nathaniel Hawthorne pioneered the American psychological novel with its delicate analysis of the inner world of characters. In most of his works, scientists as the main characters are described as “villain ” hero, exposing the negative impact of science and technology, and expressing Hawthorne’s concern about the situation of mankind. By analyzing the image of alienated scientists in the birthmarks of “The Birthmarks” and “The Daughter of Rapatinism”, Hawthorne reveals Hawthorne’s keen insight from the opposite direction to reflect on the impact of science and technology on human beings, A clear aesthetic modernity.
