我国最早将“Geneva”翻译为“日来弗”,所以国际红十字会最初传入中国时称为“日来弗红十字会”。 中国红十字会的前身是1904年3月10日在上海成立的“万国红十字会上海支会”,同年5月29日,该会订立了暂行章程。1906年7月6日日内瓦公约的外交代表集会日内瓦修改1864年的日内瓦公约,会议通过了《1906年7月6日改善战地陆军伤者病者境遇之日内瓦公约》,根据该公约,红十字会所救助的范围从伤员扩大至病员。也就是这一天,中国清朝政府指派的代表到达日内瓦,并代表清朝政府在公约上签了字。1907年“万国红十字会上海支会”正式更名为“大清红十字会”。 1911年10月在辛亥革命爆发后,“大清红十字会”正式更名为“中国红十字会”。1912年1月15日第九届国际红十字大会在华盛顿召开,中国红十字会
