剧目以营造《绕山林》独特的意境、呈现白族悠久的历史文化、多姿多彩的风情风俗,展示白族民间丰富的音乐文化和独特魅力,抒发白族独特的人文情感和民族精神风貌为宗旨。以人声与器乐组曲的形式,分“苍洱花柳”、“神都莲池”、“山野对歌”、“鞭鼓醉乐”、“梦回竹枝”五个乐章,营造了“绕山灵”的各种独特环境,融汇了大理白族典型的多种传统民歌和器乐曲。乐章间加以适当的意境性、导入性的解说,按篇章顺序连续演奏。以器乐曲与声乐曲融合一体的音乐作品形式,力求达到民族性、地域性、民间性和时代性的统一,传统文化的传承和发展的融合统一,在具较高文化品位的基础上,实现民族史诗性和艺术欣赏性的融合统一。
