We choose two indicators of export dependence and capital dependence to construct the index of openness to the outside world and measure the degree of opening to the outside world in 15 cities in the Yangtze River Delta. The results show that the openness of the cities in the Yangtze River Delta is quite different and can be divided into three levels: high open cities (Suzhou, Shanghai, Ningbo and Wuxi), moderately open cities (Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Shaoxing, Nanjing, Changzhou, Nantong) and low openness cities (Zhoushan, Huzhou, Zhenjiang, Yangzhou, Taizhou). The main factors contributing to the spatial difference in the opening up of the Yangtze River Delta are the location conditions, economic base and policy factors.
