Russia's participation in the Group of Eight nations is one of many events that run counter to traditional logic. It is not really a major economic power in the world right now - it was the first and now important membership standard. Its impact on global affairs has almost come to an end. Its status as a democracy that has never been convincingly dropped to the lowest point since the Soviet Union was disintegrated 14 years ago. No matter what kind of measurable standard to use, Russia is not “taken for granted” members of the group, some countries - China, India and Brazil - more qualified than Russia to join the group.
