“怪石以丑为美,丑到极处,便是美到极处”。这是论述园林艺术丑与美的辩证关系。戏曲界有一句行话:“当个演员容易,当一个好丑角演员是不易的”。丑角艺术又何尝不是如此?车尔尼雪夫斯基在《记崇高与滑稽》中说:“我们觉得丑是荒唐的,仅仅在那个时候,即当它不得其所而想表示自己并不丑时;只有在那时候它才以其愚蠢的妄想和失败的企图引起我们的笑……。”只有当丑力求自炫为美时候丑才变成 “Ugly rock for the United States, ugly extreme, it is the United States to the extreme.” This is a dialectical relationship between the ugliness and the beauty of garden art.
