在浙江金、衢等地的明、清建筑中,鸱鱼是一种普遍采用的雕刻装饰,其应用的广泛程度可谓是俯拾皆是。有的用于正脊两端,有的出现在檩子、替木或雀替上,有的撑拱雕成倒挂鸱鱼状,有的刻在抱鼓石上,而且凡是月梁形制的单步梁几乎都雕成卷曲鸱鱼。鸱鱼的形状在传说中为龙首、鱼身、鱼尾,其生活在大海里,善喷水激浪,在装饰手法上或露出全身,或露出头部,或仅露出嘴部,应用的形式往往是同建筑的结构十分贴切。鸱鱼的嘴里喷出水浪,有的是一朵朵连贯的浪花,恰似缠枝花卉,有的呈如意状,有的呈飘浮的流云
