In the new full-time 10-year school chemistry syllabus for the middle school, in the “solutions” chapter, on the separation part of the mixture, the paper chromatography method is listed. The principle, operation and application of this method are now briefly introduced for the reference of middle school chemistry teaching. 1. Chromatography Chromatography was first proposed by Russian botanist Twivet in 1903. He experimented with this method: Take a vertical glass tube and stuff it with a bunch of cotton in its narrow part. Figure 1) Fill in a small amount of adsorbent, such as calcium carbonate. The leaves of dried green plants are extracted with petroleum ether and the petroleum ether extract is poured into the adsorbent.
