The narrative of the religious ceremony by David Lodge’s Catholic novels reflects the two-dimensional point of view. On the one hand, the text uses unfamiliar techniques to expose some irrational and stereotyped and absurd sacramental etiquette, tries hard to break the established structure of the ceremony, , Critical attitude; on the other hand, through unconscious choice, the simulation of the symbolic structure of the ritual shows the ritual function of recognition and reconstruction of the ritual structure efforts. In fact, maintaining the structure and breaking through the structure is precisely the two extremes of the relationship between individuals and various social groups. Both of these two extremes are the same as the “threshold” relationship between the believers and the institutionalized structure of the church. The dynamic balance should be the normal life of religious groups.
