As the resistivity near the surface and shallow depth (less than 30 meters) of the potential electrode system measured more than 200% of the resistivity of the uniform medium layer, the longitude potential logging is more severe than the short potential electrode logging. This article illustrates the problem of distortion using three examples of fill-in areas in southern California. The pattern of distortion is similar for a logging tool consisting of two point source electrodes or a point source and a finite length source electrode. The former electrode arrangement is generally considered as the latter electrode arrangement
