Objective To explore the use of proprietary Chinese medicines in a hospital in Nanjing from 2013 to 2015. Methods The data of outpatients from 2013 to 2015 were retrieved from China UnionPay System, and the data were entered into the Excel table to analyze the prescriptions and sales amount, the sales amount, the strength of antimicrobial drugs (DDDs) and the daily average cost (DDC) Outpatient 2013-2015 analysis of the use of proprietary Chinese medicines. Results There was no significant difference in the number of proprietary Chinese medicines in the hospital between 2013 and 2015 (P> 0.05). The number of prescriptions of proprietary Chinese medicines in each year increased year by year. However, the proportion of the total prescriptions of proprietary Chinese medicines in outpatients declined year by year with statistical differences (P <0.05). The sales volume of proprietary Chinese medicines increased year by year, but the proportion of sales revenue of proprietary Chinese medicines in the total amount of outpatient medicines decreased year by year with a significant difference (P <0.05). In the top 15 sales Among proprietary Chinese medicines, 5 are national essential medicines in 2013, 6 are national essential medicines in 2014 and 7 are national essential medicines in 2015. Nine of the top 15 DDDs in 2013 were in 2014, 2015 to maintain the top 15. Conclusions The use of proprietary Chinese medicines in a clinic in a hospital in Nanjing tends to be reasonable. However, the DDC value of individual proprietary Chinese medicines is too high. Clinicians should pay attention to the curative effect of proprietary Chinese medicines while considering the patients’ medical expenses.
