历代词论中对于苏东坡词的评价,是我国古代文学理论审美观照发展历程的一束折影。两宋时期,由持论各异到褒扬之声占主流地位;南宋末暨金源,显露出词派论评端倪,有“豪放”并驾“婉约”曲体拓宽词作发展创造空间的理论见解,昭示苏词“以诗为词”的创造意义;发展到明清,在偏重词派评论的基础上,步入“正”、“变”论辩,与诗、骚传统内在沟通,揭示出东坡词儒化的现实意义。“东坡词论”绵延数百年,日趋切要,既是苏词本身的意义决定,更反映出文学审美观念历史形成的漫长曲折,我们的民族同样富有理论思维的审美创造能力。
