我队在五五年的砂石料钻探中，需要用大量的各种规格的螺旋钻头，过去我队所用的螺旋钻头都从外地订购，可是规格与数量上不适应我队的需要，同时价格较高，特别是当紧急任务或地质要求变更时，则在钻探工具的供应上带来了困难，直接影响着任务的胜利完成。这时由修配厂技术员及有关工人同志共同研究提出用厚15公厘与12公厘的铁板自制螺旋钻头经过工地的使用证明效果良好，现将自制的方法介绍如后，提供钻探工作者参考。
