七十年代,英国人在火力发电厂的储灰池水面上收集到空心微珠,其含量约占粉煤灰的20%(体积),这一发现,结束了人工合成空心微珠因价格昂贵而难以在轻质耐火材料上推广应用的局面。并开辟了工业废渣粉煤灰更高层次综合利用的光明前景。一九八0年,国家科委在三年重点科研项目中给济宁发电厂下达了漂珠应用试验的科研课题任务。我国对漂珠性能和应用的研究始于七十年代末,八十年代初。
