There was a woodcutter chopping wood by the river and accidentally dropped the ax into the river and was washed away by the river. He sobbed on the bank of the river. Hermes knew it, and pitied him very much. When he asked for reasons, he went down to the river, picked up a golden ax and asked if it was him. He said no, and then Hermes reckoned He started with a silver ax to ask if he had fallen, and he still said no; the third time that Hermes had gone and picked up the woodman’s ax, the woodman said that was the one he had lost. Hermes appreciated the faithfulness of the woodcutter and gave him a golden ax and silver ax as a gift.
