Amoco drillers used a new type of calcium chloride and polymer-based drilling fluid in the Gulf of Mexico drilling. When ultra-deep waters are drilled at the top of clay slime formations, this drilling fluid is better at inhibiting or enveloping the activated slime, removing or minimizing the mud bits from the bit and downhole well assembly, increasing the mechanical ROP, lower drilling costs per meter. This drilling fluid has good rheology and fluidity.
