Most of the gentry and merchants in Shanghai were constitutionalists. After the enactment of the “constitutional constitutional” edict in the Qing Dynasty, they set off a constitutional movement and sent representatives to Beijing for petitions on three occasions. During the Revolution of 1911, the Constitutionalists recognized the intention of the Qing Government to persistently persist in the feudal autocratic system and were completely disappointed with the Qing court. At this time, the revolutionary circles in Shanghai vigorously publicized the revolution, actively sought for them, and the constitutionalists were all transferred to the revolutionary ranks. Shanghai gentry and merchants actively engaged in revolutionary activities and supported the revolutionary regime with their abundant economic power. Shanghai’s gentry business is linked to Shanghai’s special economic and political status. History has proved that it is the correct strategy for the Shanghai revolutionary faction to make active preparations for the participation of the constitutionalists in the revolution.
