In this paper, 45 cases of herpes simplex keratitis (HSK) patients with serum soluble IL-2 receptor (sIL-2R) were studied by double antibody sandwich ELISA. The results showed that serum sIL-2R levels in active HSK patients were significantly higher than inactive and normal controls (P <0.001); serum sIL-2R levels in inactive HSK patients compared with the normal control group had no significant difference (P> 0.05). By comparing the levels of serum sIL-2R in two types of active HSK patients, we found that the stromal type was significantly higher than that of epithelial type (P <0.05). These results suggest that abnormally elevated serum sIL-2R levels in active HSK patients lead to decreased immune function and antiviral ability, which may be one of the reasons for HSK recurrent episodes. In addition, abnormal levels of serum sIL-2R have some correlation with HSK
