US researchers found that drinking two cups of coffee a day may help prevent Alzheimer’s disease. A team from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee tracking 6467 elderly people over the age of 65 and assessing their cognitive abilities annually asks them to record the amount of coffee, tea and coke they drink daily for caffeine intake. Ten years later, elderly people who consumed more than 261 mg of caffeine a day had a 36% lower risk of dementia 10 years later than those who did not consume caffeine. This amount of caffeine, equivalent to 2 cups of Starbucks coffee cup, or 6 cups of black tea. Researchers are not aware of the reasons for this association, but believe this may stem from the fact that caffeine binds to brain cell receptors and prevents cognitive impairment
