Roadheading machines (ie arm tunnel boring machines) developed from coal cutting machines are generally classified as tunnels for soft rock in terms of their excavation performance, machine construction, weight, engine power, etc. Excavating machinery. However, in the current tunneling project, in order to avoid the impact of environmental problems such as noise and vibration, the demand for mechanical excavation from blasting to roadheading machines has been increasing. However, there are many difficulties in using tunnel boring machines to excavate harder rock formations. In order to study the possibility of excavating roadheaders, field and laboratory tests were conducted. In a field trial, excavations of various rocks with a wide range of hardness were conducted on an S-125 roadheading machine (Mitui Miike Machinery Co., Ltd.) and the excavation capacity and the loss of a tooth cutter were measured. In the lab, the cutting performance of the cutter was tested using a cutter test machine. This report describes the results of these tests and based on these experimental data, discusses the possibility of excavating hard rock with an armored tunnel boring machine.
