Almost 25 years have passed since Simpson (1957) first reported smoking among pregnant women. He found that pregnant women smoking a high rate of premature birth. Lowe (1959) also found that their babies born significantly lower body weight. The authors also recognize that smoking pregnant women have high rates of miscarriage and perinatal mortality, decreased fetal respiratory activity and impaired mental status in children, but these risks could be avoided by quitting or cutting off smoke four months prior to pregnancy.
