The American train traveler Paul Tairu said in his book Traveling in China that the railway can never reach Lhasa with the Kunlun Mountains. An authoritative tunnel expert in Switzerland also asserted that it is simply impossible to cross the Kunlun Mountains with rocks and ice. The construction of railways in permafrost areas of up to 550 kilometers is a worldwide technical challenge. The Qinghai-Tibet Plateau also seems to be an insurmountable “heaven road.” However, as the 9th of July 2006, at 9 a.m. from the first column of Golmud in Qinghai Province, the whistle of the long-awaited train in Tibet was once completely broken by the devil prophecy - more than 960 kilometers are at an altitude of 4000 Meters above the Qinghai-Tibet Railway was officially opened, “the roar of the train rang the roof of the world.” One month after the victory of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway, our correspondents interviewed Professor Zhang Luxin, head of the expert group headed by Qinghai-Tibet Railway for building a 32-year snow-field plateau and a famous expert on frozen soil. Professor Zhang said that the opening of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway is the first step we have taken in solving technical problems in road construction in permafrost regions. Due to the impact of the global climate change on permafrost, the railway will also be affected in the long run. My team and I will continue to pay attention to this change and use scientific means to ensure the safe operation of the Qinghai-Tibet Railway. I will continue to work in Golmud, had chosen frozen soil, is to choose the inaccessible plateau, also chose a lonely life.
