“The Swimmer”is the representative of John Cheever and it is one of the most famous short stories in present America. The story is simple and it is not long, but it has profound meaning because many imageries are been used in the story. It tries to ana-lyze the escaping and returning from the symbolic point of view, for escaping is an important motif in modern society and in the end, only returning can realize self-redemption.
