Modern toothbrushes were not widely prevalent in the world until the 19th century. However, the history of human teeth can be traced back thousands of years ago. How did Chinese ancients clean their teeth before the introduction of modern toothbrushes? At least at least 2,000 years ago, the ancients started to rinse their mouth with salt water or tea. For example, “Book of Rites” in the record: “chicken Chu Ming, salty cough ”. However, before the Sui and Tang dynasties, the ancients clean their teeth mainly by tingling and gargle. For example, in the Jin dynasty, about 1700 years ago, people cleaned their mouths with metal tooth-cleaning tools - “toothpicks”.
