The novel was published in 1898, is a Gothic ghost novel. By describing the terrible experience of a young female tutor between reality and illusion, the psychological contradiction between human repression and primitive impulse was manifested. This article attempts to interpret the novel’s theme through four textual research methods: paradox, irony and mixed tension in the new critical theory.
