1947年12月3日,十纵奉命开辟桐柏区根据地。部队突破平汉线,在桐柏区展开之后,先后解放桐柏县、邓县等地,使桐柏根据地得到进一步巩固和扩大,被誉为“桐柏英雄”。在巍巍的桐柏山,耸立着一座巍峨的纪念碑,纪念着为解放这块土地而牺牲的一万二千位烈士。这里,有共和国主席李先念题写的碑铭——桐柏英雄永垂不朽!碑身三个面分别镌刻着:毛泽东的“发扬革命传统,争取更大光荣”的手迹、李先念书写的“桐柏英雄纪念碑”。
December 3, 1947, ten vertical command was ordered to open Tongbai District base. After the troops broke through the Pinghan Line, they started to liberate Tongbai County and Deng County and other places to further consolidate and expand the Tongbai Base.
