Microinjection of kainic acid into the ventricles to selectively destroy the neurons and mossy fiber clusters in hippocampal CA3 region of mice resulted in the rapid decrease of memory retention and the shortened half-life of mice. The area under the curve decreased to 1/4 of the control group . It shows that the maintenance of hippocampal neurons functional status and synaptic junctional strength is an important material basis for learning and memory
