The development of stress due to instantaneous heat transfer or power in the structure of a pre-cracked dam can be considered as a peculiar example of fracture mechanics under special circumstances. Both functions require the use of special contact elements that open and close the fracture surface. It is further deduced that the crack tip region must be represented by a (metamorphic) brick element of 27 nodes to achieve cell compatibility. A routine is presented that is very similar to the procedure for calculating the stress intensity factor for 20 node cells distributed along the fracture front with stress intensity factors. The fracture mechanics research on temperature change cracking of pier is proved that this method is suitable
