西方美术史中风景画的发展长期以来一直十分缓慢。首要的原因是,自文艺复兴以来,统治者对于绘画的叙事和说教的功能特别的注重,而风景画无法承担这种责任;另外,大众对于风景画的欣赏也只限于其优美的一面。因此,受诸多因素的影响,风景画的发展一度陷入困境。到了19世纪,一些杰出的画家们在浪漫主义思潮的影响下对风景画赋予了更多的个人的情思与生命的意义,于是,风景画具有了更强的表现力和感染力;它终于突破了长期以来的历史局限性,真正赢得了完全的独立并获得了充分发展。
The development of landscapes in Western art history has long been slow.
