一人们对有毒植物的认识要早于药用植物,但远不如对药用植物那样被人们重视。一种植物是否有毒,从外形上是看不出来的,只有经过尝试才能知道。原始社会时期,我们的祖先在寻找食物过程中,常常因误食有毒植物而中毒致死,但在当时并未引起重视。到了公元前3000年左右即神农时代,《淮南子:修务训》中才记载:“神农尝百草之滋味,水泉之甘苦,令民知所避就,当此之时,一日而遇七十毒。”这说明当时中毒事故之多,并开始引起了人们的注意。
