Flying to the “Red Zone” Last July we departed from Moscow to visit Volgograd. Volgograd, formerly known as Charimjin, was renamed Stalingrad after the October Revolution, and in 1956 Khrushchev again changed it to Volgograd. On the plane, the general manager of a large Russian company and the director of communications of a certain state in the Soviet Union heard that I was a Chinese and were particularly friendly to me. He told me that Volgograd is “the red zone.” The Russians divided the country into “red areas”, “gray areas” and “brown areas” according to the political tendencies of residents and political parties. The areas of influence of the Russian communists are called “red areas”.
